3lhd Studio won the first prize at the New Silk Road international competition. In the thematic park of the Chinese town of Xian, nine new locations are being built. They will represent the regions influenced by the Silk Road through history and Croatian architects have been entrusted with East Europe. The intention of the whole project is to retrieve the splendour of the former capital and international tourist destination, because there was the starting point of the Silk Road. The tomb of the Terracotta Warriors is also located there. The architectural team njirić + architekti are also active in China. In the town of Nanjing they are designing a project for the Pearl Spring Lake tourist complex. Selected by Arata Isozaki, Steven Holl has also been entrusted with a building project. In the short recess between the opening of the Nelson-Atkins Museum extension in Kansas City and four new projects in China, among which is also a residential block with additional facilities in Beijing, Aleksandra Wagner interviewed Steven Holl. Right after opening the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Expansion in Kansas City, Steven Holl Architects win two out of eight RIBA International Awards 2007.
Saša Randić and Idis Turato have recently won the first prize for a new hotel in Rovinj. Saša Bradić writes about it, stressing that this has been the first public, invited, but also open competition for a major hotel on the coast during the last ten transition years. 3LHD Studio will also build a hotel in Rovinj. They are revitalising a once popular zone that has in time lost its attractiveness. The Monte Mulini zone is characterised by hotel architecture from the seventies of the 20th century, and the Lone Hotel is in the nearest vicinity of the Eden Hotel, a famous structure by the architect Miroslav Begović from the seventies.
A hotel and a Loisum winerie store in Austria, designed by Steven Holl, will be presented as a separate project. The Lopez De Heredia Winery in Haro, Spain is the work by Zaha Hadid. Summer is often linked with the idea of hedonism, so that we have added a story about food to wines. Lovorka Prpić writes about the appearance of the famous Catalonian chef Ferran Adriá at documenta 12 in Kassel.
Art director Roger M. Buergel has invited Adriá to this most prestigious show of contemporary art and caused another polemic. His restaurant at the Catalonian coast has been declared a Documenta exhibition pavilion, on equal footing with other ones. This year Oscar Niemeyer will celebrate his 100th birthday. The recently opened Folk Theatre in Niterói shows that he is still active.
